The Key Issues

The proposed planning scheme amendments introduce several critical threats to our environment and community.

Green Spaces Gone Forever

This plan pushes the destruction of vast swathes of open green space and public land. Once it is bulldozed, sold off or concreted over, it is never coming back. At the same time, Council claim this will achieve their Vision of "being the most sustainable region in Australia" and our land will be "undiminished by development". We expect a plan that genuinely delivers to the claims it makes; in many ways, this plan does the opposite.

Our Natural Playground Taken Away

Whether you walk, run, ride, camp or fish, we are all people who love the outdoors and are custodians of our home. We've all watched as we've lost the natural places we once loved. Places we want our kids to explore someday are being demolished for "progress", with no end in sight. We've lost around 70% of our native forests already across SEQ - it's time to lead the way with genuine targets to restore what we have lost.

High-Rise Invasion

Did you know the State Government has already forced through "unlimited height zoning" in Maroochydore, setting us up for skyscraper developments? Now the plan continues with whole sections of the coastal strip being rezoned to force mass unit developments. Do you think these developers have our best interests at heart, or their own?

Shortsighted and Misguided

This plan is a shortsighted money-grab, plain and simple. Bulldoze vast swathes of land, cram as many people in as we can, and the Government can claim "economic growth", regardless of whether we are all worse off for it. We value our way of life, our open space and prosperity built on real vision, not developer sell-offs.

You Won't Have a Say

The plan removes your legal right to object to any code-assessable multi-storey developments in your street. These changes will prevent you from having any legal grounds to object to highrises in your street, by sneakily changing the assessment criteria from "impact" to "code". Your complaints will fall on deaf ears, so speak up now before it's too late.

No Supporting Infrastructure

The scheme proposes 219,100 new residents, but lacks plans for the required schools, hospitals, road and public transport upgrades to serve them. Heck, even if we built the infrastructure, do we really want to make the Coast into a concrete jungle? How's it working out for them down in Surfers?

Our Shared Purpose

We love the Sunny Coast. Whether we've been here for one year or for generations, we want to see our home flourish and people prosper. We want to grow back the natural beauty that has been eroded over time and show the next generation that we had the courage to do things a little differently.

We don't want to see our home turned into sprawling sub-divisions, traffic jams or high-rise coastal strips where economic success measured by how many units we can sell and a never-ending spiral of "bulldozing for growth and development".

Information about the scheme is publicly available, but many of the key details are hard to find for yourself and the big picture is very difficult to understand. We want everyone who cares about our coast to know the full extent of what it could mean if the changes are adopted.

Around 70% of South East Queensland has been deforested already. And now the Government is pushing hard to force through even more irreversible development, drive the most rapid population growth seen in the history of the Sunshine Coast, and brand this as "sustainability".

Government have gone to great lengths to make the scheme sound like a good idea for you and I. It's not. It prioritises State Government and developers at the cost of our environment, our communities, and our coastal spirit.

Why Use Our Form?

The most powerful thing you can do is lodge a submission to object to the proposed changes, however putting together a submission between work, school, or parenting duties can be near-impossible.

Submitting through our platform helps to simplify the process, ensures your submission is properly made, and distills the key changes down for you, so you don't have to decipher hundreds of pages yourself.

Submitting through our platform also means we can keep the pressure on Government to serve the will of the people and ensure we call out what the community really ask for. There is a genuine fear that submissions will be ignored if made direct to Council, and we will work to ensure that doesn't happen.
